Christofle, the renowned French manufactory, crafted this superb pair of centrepiece bowls. Founded by Charles Christofle (d. 1863) in 1830, the firm is particularly known for introducing the techniques of silver plating and electrolytic gilding to France.
Of an elongated and slender form, the main frame of the stand is decorated as if wrapped with silvered bronze branches. These terminate on both ends and in the middle, with the larger branches acting as stands on which the prominent glass bowls rest. Above the branch-like feet is a square handle allowing for the easy movement of the pieces. A selection of gilt bronze mounts shaped like pinecones with an ornate surround are mounted all around the centrepieces.
The underside of each antique is stamped with the maker’s mark as well as with several workshop marks and an inventory number.
Of an elegant design and crafted by an important maker, these centrepiece bowls would make a stunning addition to one’s space, for example, to display fruit.
