The eighteenth century was the last century of a Europe dominated by great monarchies, of the ancien regime. In France and Spain, the Bourbons reigned supreme; in England, Georgian society was in full flight; while elsewhere in Europe, whether in Prussia, Russia, or Italy, strong monarchies held sway.
The decorative styles associated with this time express the grandeur of the age, ranging from the Baroque of the early eighteenth century, through the Rococo of the middle decades, to the Neoclassical of the years before the triumph of the French Revolution.
