This superb potpourri vase was crafted by Meissen, one of the most preeminent makes of European porcelainware in the 19th century.
Of baluster form, the vase employs a pastel blue and pink colour scheme that immediately conjures up the Rococo style. The main body of the vase features a delicate painted scene to the central front. An amorous couple can be seen gazing enchanted at a caged dove – a typical Rococo subject. A similar circular painted panel can be seen to the reverse, depicting a colourful bouquet that matches the surrounding decoration. Each panel is surrounded by an applied floral cartouche, where each delicate blossom, verdant leaf, or budding lemon has been individually hand-crafted, painted, and applied to the vase. The top and bottom of each cartouche features gilt Rocaille decoration.
Twin handles are attached to either side of the body, cast as sinuous branching forms with lines of gilded decoration. The handles are similarly applied with floral decoration. Against the left-side handle sits a charming putto, swathed in a pale blue robe. The putto holds a blue flower in each hand that matches the colour of his garment. A further putto, this time covered with a flowing purple robe, is applied to the foot of the vase. The foot is similarly decorated with floral and gilded details, and features a blue Meissen crossed swords mark beneath.
The pierced lid of the vase is decorated with further gilt scrolling forms and applied flowers. Surmounting the entire piece is an extraordinary porcelain bouquet, which mirrors the blooms and colours of the decoration on the body below.
The vase sits upon an associated Meissen stand, which too features the blue crossed mark on the underside. The base is decorated with similar gilt Rocaille forms to the vase above, as well as employing a similar blue, pink, and white colour scheme.
This vase showcases the superb craftsmanship of the Meissen manufactory, and would make a wonderful addition to the appropriate interior space.
