Forti, Ettore (Italian, fl. 1880-1920)

Ettore Forti was a prolific Italian painter, who was active in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Little is definitively known about Forti’s life and historical sources disagree about the dates of his birth and death.

Forti specialised in depicting painted genre scenes in a naturalistic style similar to that of Lawrence Alma-Tadema. He concentrated on portraying scenes from Ancient Rome, which were rarely based on actual historical events but nevertheless enjoyed immense popularity with their late-Victorian audience. Forti is famous for focusing on the architectural features of ancient sites, which he rendered in fastidious detail. Indeed, the figures in Forti's paintings often took second place to his elaborate renderings of grandiose ancient Roman architecture, detailed mosaic floors, and Roman frescoes.
