Knell, William Calcott (British, 1830-1876)

William Calcott Knell (1830-1880) was a 19th Century British painter famous for his skilful renditions of maritime subjects, particularly those of coastal scenes with boats.

The younger Knell was the son of William Adolphus Knell (1802-1875), who also worked as a marine painter. In William Calcott’s work the influence of his father is evident, both in the composition and the execution of his motifs. However, Knell was also inspired by other contemporaries, becoming intent on capturing the changing ambience of the day and the transience of nature.

Between 1848 and 1865 Knell showed his works at the Royal Academy, the Society of British Artists, and the British Institution.
