Berger, Julius Victor (Austrian, 1850-1902)

Julius Victor Berger (1850-1902) was a 19th Century Austrian artist, remembered predominantly for his genre paintings and portraits.

Berger was the son of Ignaz Johann Berger, a religious artist. Julius Victor entered the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna at the young age of 14. In 1874 he was granted a three year scholarship to study art in Rome.

In 1881, Berger became a professor of decorative painting at the Wiener Kunstgewerbeschule, which he later left to become a professor at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts in 1887. Berger's most famous work is perhaps his fine ceiling painting in Hall XIX of the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna.
