    Giltwood

    The giltwood process refers to wooden pieces that have been gillded by a thin layer of gold leaf applied to them. Giltwood became a popular in the decorative arts of the 18th and 19th Centuries, which saw the rise in popularity of beautiful giltwood chairs, tables, cabinets and vitrines. These works remain highly prized antique collectables, which provide interiors with an atmosphere of elegance and luxury on account of their deep golden hue.

    However, the most prominent examples of high quality giltwood are the antique frames that surround 19th Century paintings and mirrors. These giltwood frames are considered to be hugely valuable in their own right and are often collected separately from the mirrors or paintings that they were originally intended for.
